Frequently asked questions about Cobblit

Everything you need to know about how the Cobblit connector works, how it is installed and where it can be used.

How it works & applications

What is Cobblit?

Cobblit is a connector for fixing timber posts to different foundations. The system consists of a base plate and a top plate that slide together and are then locked. This means the timber post can be installed without having to be turned onto a threaded rod.

What can Cobblit be used for?

Cobblit can be used for verandas, canopies, pergolas and other timber structures where timber posts are fixed to a foundation.

Which foundations can Cobblit be used on?

Depending on the chosen fixing method, Cobblit can be used on concrete piers, concrete, paving, plinths, timber and ground screws, among other foundations. Installation on concrete or paving is possible when a suitable, stable foundation is present. A loose concrete tile on sand is not by itself suitable as a foundation for a load-bearing timber structure.

Why does Cobblit consist of two parts?

The top plate is fixed to the timber post and the base plate to the foundation. The two parts then slide together. This also makes it possible to install a timber post where rotating it is difficult or not possible.

Is Cobblit an alternative to a threaded rod or adjustable post base?

Cobblit uses a top plate and a base plate that slide together. The timber post does not have to be turned onto a threaded rod. It can therefore be a practical alternative to a traditional threaded rod or adjustable post base. Cobblit is not a traditional height adjuster.

Is Cobblit a connector or a coupling plate?

On this website and as a product, Cobblit is called a connector: a top plate and a base plate that slide together. “Coupling plate” is sometimes used as a search or trade term for plates that join timber posts. If you are looking for a coupling plate for a timber post, Cobblit is this connector — not a different product name.

Is Cobblit adjustable?

Cobblit is not a traditional height adjuster. It is designed as a rigid sliding connection between the timber post and the foundation. If the foundation is not completely level, the base plate can be aligned and, where needed, packed out with Cobblit packing rings.

Installation

Is Cobblit easy to install?

Yes. The top plate is fixed to the timber post and the base plate to the foundation. The two parts are then slid together and locked.

Can Cobblit be used in hard-to-reach places?

Yes. Because the timber post does not have to be turned onto a threaded rod, Cobblit is practical against a wall, planter or other situation where little space is available.

What should I do if the foundation is not level?

Make sure the base plate is aligned correctly before it is fixed. Cobblit packing rings are available for packing out small height differences. They fit the Cobblit system and can be used to pack the base plate to the required height.

What can I do if the parts are difficult to slide together?

First check that the end of the timber post is flat and square, and that the top and base plates are aligned with each other. Timber can be slightly twisted, which can make sliding more difficult. Check the alignment first and do not force the connection.

Can Cobblit be disconnected again?

Yes. First remove the locking pins. The top and base plates can then be slid apart.

Are fixings supplied?

Fixings are supplied separately from the Cobblit connector. Complete Cobblit fixing sets are available. Which set you need depends on the application and foundation.

Cobblit is made from aluminium and has a black finish.

Is Cobblit suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. Cobblit is designed for timber structures in outdoor spaces.

Which Cobblit size do I need?

The right version depends on the size of the timber post. VZ-120 is for 12 × 12 cm timber posts (connector 10 × 10 cm), VZ-150 for 15 × 15 cm timber posts (connector 13 × 13 cm) and VZ-200 for 20 × 20 cm timber posts (connector 18 × 18 cm). Note: planed timber may be slightly smaller than the stated size.
